Sri Lanka's government has approved plans to build the country's largest solar energy plant, a 700-megawatt facility in the Kilinochchi district, to address the power crisis caused by blackouts last year.

The Ahmedabad-based conglomerate, which has a presence in ports, energy, cement and power among others has also pledged to plant 100 million trees by 2030, the company said in a statement today.

The country’s largest producer of cement aims to meet 85% of its total energy requirements from green energy by the end of this decade, up from 22% currently. Its interim target is to meet three-fifth of its total energy requirements from green energy by 2025-26 (Apr-Mar).

Renewable energy ambitions within NDCs are insufficient to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C.

In a written reply in Rajya Sabha, the minister said that the EBP Programme's successful ethanol blending initiative has also ensured prompt payment of around Rs 19,300 crore to the country's farmers

The project involves the installation of 40 solar photovoltaic modules, each with a capacity of 50 kWp, aiming to augment the renewable energy capacity of the Sealdah Division

Indeed Darren Woods, the CEO of Exxon Mobil, focused on the issue at the APEC CEO Summit by saying “To get serious about net zero, the world needs to get real . . we cannot replace an energy system overnight that took 150 years to build.”

Of the 14 proposals that received the SHLCC nod, 10 are new projects worth Rs 19,452.40 crore, while the remaining four are additional investment projects of investments worth Rs 14,662.59 crore.
