The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and World Meteorological Organization (WMO) have released their first joint report to strengthen understanding of renewable energy resources and their intricate relationship with climate variability and change.

During the UN's climate talks here, 118 countries committed to tripling the global renewable energy capacity by 2030 in a highly endorsed initiative. This ambitious goal aims to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels in the world's overall energy production.

The pledge was among a slew of COP28 announcements on Saturday aimed at decarbonizing the energy sector - source of around three-quarters of global greenhouse gas emissions - that included expanding nuclear power, cutting methane emissions, and choking off private finance for coal power.

With the enormous former Expo 2020 site given over to green -- and not so green -- companies to trumpet their climate credentials, the private sector has never been embraced so warmly at a climate summit as it has been in the oil-rich city state.

The European Union, United States and COP28 host the United Arab Emirates have been rallying support for the pledge as a means to the sharp drop in planet-warming emissions needed this decade to avoid unleashing more severe climate change.

Among the expected pledges at COP28 are a goal to triple renewable energy capacity and initiatives on methane and coal power. These voluntary side deals have proliferated in recent years, even as global temperatures and greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise.

It is evident that post Ukraine-Russia war, the prime concern of the Western world is to help protect their people and their quality of life. Contrast that with the developing countries, including India, where leave alone any quality of life, very large proportions of population is fighting for basic survival.

Speaking on “India’s journey towards sustainable cooling”, Nandan highlighted India's progress in meeting its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), including a 33% reduction in emission intensity of its GDP as of 2019, surpassing the initial 2030 target.
