India is the only G20 country to have ensured that the pledge towards creating a green planet made at the Paris Climate Change Summit in 2015 was fulfilled even before the deadline, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday.

He said that the country’s focus is shifting towards ‘green growth,’ which aims to both generate new employment opportunities and enhance environmental protection

As part of its national climate plan or nationally determined contributions (NDCs) to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, India has committed to achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based electricity installed capacity by 2030.

Infrastructure modernisation and expansion determine the success of global energy transitions as they will increase resilience and build flexibility for a diversified and interconnected energy system.

The Chief Minister noted that the move is aimed at achieving a greener future in line with the guidelines of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).

It added that such an increase is crucial to sustainably absorb the rising share of RE in the country’s overall power generation mix

"To achieve the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, India must invest in green hydrogen production infrastructure. This includes scaling up renewable energy sources for electrolysis, developing storage and distribution networks, and fostering public-private partnerships to drive innovation and cost reduction," Professor Ganapati Myneni, Member of the Board of Directors, International Symposium on Hydrogen in Matter (ISOHIM), and Director, India Nuclear Energy Partnership, told ET.

Despite the hype surrounding hydrogen as a clean energy source, most of the planned 1,600 projects lack committed buyers. Only a minority have secured firm purchase agreements. Analysts advised that successful projects should align with customers and have integrated clean energy sources. Some ventures, like Hy Stor’s Mississippi project, followed this model.

The Gensol-Matrix consortium’s total secured capacity now stands at 300 MW, including a previous 63 MW awarded in the first tranche of the SECI tender. This success brings the total PLI incentive to Rs 450 crore.

The Tamil Nadu Cabinet sanctioned Rs 44,125 crore for 15 projects expected to create over 24,700 jobs. Additionally, three renewable energy policies targeting 20,000 MW by 2030 were approved. On August 17, the Chief Minister will open an industrial housing facility for Foxconn employees in Kancheepuram.
